Wien & München

The German Studies Department is proud to conduct Emory's longest-standing Summer Study Abroad Program. For the past 50 years, Emory students have enrolled in seven-week courses in Wien, the former imperial city of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and today one of the booming and truly international cities in Central Europe. Our students take intermediate or advanced German courses that explore topics in Austrian cultural history. One element that makes this program unique is that students stay with host families and thus are afforded the opportunity to immerse themselves in Viennese daily life. Each summer, there are a number of excursions to historical and cultural sites. In addition, students are reimbursed within reason for cultural activities in the city, such as museum visits and musical or opera performances.

For the summer of 2025, with generous support from the Halle Foundation, the German Studies summer study abroad program will be held in Wien (for the first half) as well as in München (for the second half). After the conclusion of the first 3.5 week term in Wien, students and the program director will travel together by train to München, where the second term will commence.

We are particularly committed to the program because these two cities are themselves such ideal places to study the cultures and literatures of the German-speaking worlds. Austria's position in the heart of Central Europe, as well as a gateway to Eastern Europe, provides an exemplary educational context for examining longstanding traditions and neglected connections in the region. And München, as Germany’s third largest city, is a hub of cultural life in southern Germany and Central Europe in general, and is even humorously referred to as Germany’s “secret capital.” Both cities are ideal bases for exploring European history, and the natural beauty of the Alpine region.

Why Wien?

Program Description

The program lasts seven and a half weeks and consists of two sessions, each one covering 15 class days. Classes meet for three hours each day during each session.

The arrival date for the 2024 program is Sunday, June 1, 2025, and classes begin on Monday, June 2. The last day of classes is Wednesday, July 23, and students are free to leave the program starting Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Classes will take place at Webster Vienna Private University, Praterstrasse 23, 1020 Wien and Harry's Home Hotel, Bunzlauer Platz 5, 80992 München.

Students must enroll in GER 375 (1 credit course) in the spring of 2024 semester and the two-course, eight-credit sequences taught in German that is appropriate for their level of ability for the summer session (8 credit hours total):

  • German 201: Intermediate German (TBD) Fulfills the IC GER
  • German 202: Intermediate German (TBD) Fulfills the IC GER
  • German 370 A: Voices of Vienna's Streets (Prof. Paul Buchholz) Fulfills the IC GER
  • German 370 B:  TBD (Prof. Levin Arnsperger) Fulfills the IC GER

 

COSTS
Tuition for 8 credits: $ 15,848 (German 201-202, 370 A & B)
Program Fee:   $ 2,058 (including Health and Wellness fee of $108)
Air fare:   $ 1,900 (approx.)
Personal allowance: $ 1,700 (approx.)

 

  • Financial Aid: Emory undergraduates who qualify for financial aid during the regular academic year are considered by the Office of Financial Aid for a summer aid award after registration in summer study abroad classes. No additional application is necessary.
  • Departmental Scholarships (application for all 3 scholarships)
    • Max Kade Foundation need-based scholarships of $4,500 each to two students in 200-level and 2 students in 300-level German
    • Viola Westbrook merit-based scholarships of at least $1,500 for declared German Studies majors and minors
    • Ferdinand Seefried merit-based scholarships of at least $1,500
  • Emory and External Scholarships

Please note that there are two separate applications to complete:

  1. The general application for summer education abroad through the Education Abroad Office. Applications become available starting Mid-December and are due by Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
  2. The application for departmental scholarships. The one application form for all departmental scholarships is available here and is due Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
