Study abroad scholarships

The German Studies Department has had the extremely good fortune of having had some very generous benefactors in recent years who have made it possible to offer four different scholarships for study abroad.

Note: You may apply for all four scholarships but can only receive up to two different grants. Students may receive the Halle Scholarship in combination with a Max Kade, Westbrook, or Seefried Scholarship, but the latter three grants cannot be combined

Since 2007 the Max Kade Foundation has generously provided four $4,500 need-based scholarships to enable students from the Department of German Studies at Emory University to participate in the Vienna-Freiburg program. Two scholarships are for students who will take Intermediate German 201/202, and the other two scholarships for students who will take third-year German 370 A/B. Recipients are selected based on (1) financial need, (2) academic merit, and (3) strength of application and recommendation. German majors and minors will receive preference.

In fall 2011, the German Studies Department proudly launched the Viola Westbrook Endowed Scholarship to honor Viola Westbrook’s four decades of commitment to German Studies at Emory and abroad, and to enable German Studies majors and minors to continue their language studies in a German-speaking environment, either in the department’s own summer study abroad program in Vienna-Freiburg or in another study abroad program coordinated by Emory’s Education Abroad Office. For over four decades Viola Westbrook taught German at Emory and through her contagious and seemingly boundless energy fostered in-depth understanding of German-speaking life, culture, and history in her students. The department is particularly indebted to the generous support of her husband, Albert Westbrook, and to Stuart A. Rose (76B), Emory alumnus and literary benefactor, and many other colleagues and friends of the department who made valuable contributions to the endowed fund. Recipients are selected on the basis of (1) academic merit, (2) commitment to the study of German, and (3) strength of application and recommendation. Only declared German Studies majors and minors may apply for the Westbrook Endowed Scholarship. The amount of the scholarship is based on the number and quality of applicants as well as the size of the fund at the time of disbursement, but will most likely equal at least $1,500.

Through the generosity of the Claus Halle Foundation, the Department of German Studies is able to offer seven $1,500 need-based scholarships to enable students from Emory University to cover their living allowances for their stay in Freiburg during the second half of the summer study abroad program. Recipients are selected based on (1) financial need, (2) academic merit, and (3) majoring or minoring in German.

The former Honorary Consul General of Austria Ferdinand Seefried and his family have provided generous funds for students participating in the summer study abroad program in Vienna-Freiburg. Recipients are selected on the basis of (1) academic merit, (2) commitment to the study of German, and (3) strength of application and recommendation. The amount of the scholarship is based on the number and quality of applicants as well as the size of the fund at the time of disbursement, but will most likely equal at least $1,500.
