Research

Fulbright Research Fellowship. One-year academic fellowships for graduating seniors to support independent research.

DAAD One-Year Grants. Funding for one year of independent research in Germany. Nov 4th.

Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus Scholarship. One-year scholarships for advanced undergraduates and graduate students interested in topics related to Berlin and larger international issues. Dec 15th.

German Chancellor Fellowship. One year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Applicants design projects and decide where to pursue them. Sep 15th.

ThinkSwiss. Scholarships for a research stay in Switzerland. It supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields. January, see website for updated deadline

Internships

DAAD Bundestag Internship-EMGIP. Two-month internship in German parliament for advanced undergrads and grad students who are fluent in German. Sept 15th.

Internationales Parlaments-Stipendium. Five-month scholarship for college graduates from 41 different countries to work and research in the German Bundestag. Advanced German required. Aug 31st.

Cultural Vistas Internships. 3-12 month internships. Rolling application deadline except for summer internships (Dec 15). $1500 program fee covers placement, work and residency permit, and orientation.

Cultural Vistas Fellowship. 15 fully-funded 8-week summer internships including pre-departure and re-entry seminars in NYC for rising juniors and seniors; preference given to historically underrepresented students. Nov 15th.

Bundesfreiwilligendienst – BFD. 30,000 positions available throughout Germany in a range of socially oriented fields (e.g., social work, historic preservation, environmental protection). Open to anyone with a high school diploma. Participants are mentored, hold their positions typically for 12 months, and receive room, board, pocket money, and insurance. Rolling admission.

Volunteer Service with Action Reconciliation Service for Peace. Participants take part in seminars and have an opportunity to experience the German culture of remembrance, visit Holocaust memorials, learn about everyday life in modern Germany, expand their German skills, and set a sign for peace and democratic values. January application deadline.

Teach and research; teach and intern; study and intern (combo programs)

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. 12-month program consists of 2 months of intensive language study, 4 months of study at a German university, and a 5-month internship in one’s chosen field. Knowledge of German strongly preferred. Nov 1st.

Fulbright Combined Award in Austria. This program is available to graduating seniors who are interested in combining an English teaching assistantship at an Austrian high school with a research project conducted at an Austrian university for one academic year. High-intermediate abilities in German required.

Fulbright Community-Based Combined Award in Austria. Available to graduating seniors who are interested in combining an English teaching assistantship at an Austrian high school with a community-based project conducted in conjunction with coursework at an Austrian university for one academic year.

Study & Internship Program (SIP) in Germany. A full academic semester of study abroad at one of the German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS7 universities) followed by one-semester professional internship experience in a company or research institute in Germany. Feb 15th.
